During the Consistory, Leo XIV told the cardinals, “Support me, stand with me in this battle against war,” pro-homosexual Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco of Algiers told IlMessaggero.it on August 23. Questioning the “Just War” Cardinal Vesco questioned the Christian concept of a just war, arguing that “for those who are fighting, their own war is always just.” While acknowledging a right to self-defense, he asked, “But up to what point?” “In any case, war itself is not just. In the end, we no longer know where to draw the line.” Israel and its “Settlements, Settlements, Settlements” On Gaza, CardinalVesco recalled living in Jerusalem for two years and visiting Gaza several times during the Intifada: “I experienced the checkpoints and saw with my own eyes the humiliation they represented. Today it is much worse.” Even then, he said, it was difficult to believe in a two-state solution because the Israeli authorities did not want one: “Netanyahu has not wanted it for more than twenty years.” …ተጨማሪ
Third Letter My excellent Lord, — O great treasurer of the Holy Spirit! O new Abraham upon earth! [After these words St. Francis gives a long and severe reproach to ecclesiastics for their covetousness, indolence, and want of charity and zeal for the spiritual welfare of the people; then he says]: Let the kings and princes in Christendom be ashamed of themselves, who live without charity. God has granted them means to lead a good life, and they are bad, having their hands shut up with the accursed lock of avarice; they are stingy in good works and prodigal in doing evil; they spend more than what they have in vanities and in useless things, in order to indulge their passions, oppressing their poor subjects. O wretched, unhappy men! Do you know what vanity is? Do you understand that your people are the creatures and subjects of the Most High God? They are men like you; children of Adam like you; they have been given to you as subjects, not that you might rob and maltreat them, but in …ተጨማሪ
"Woe to you because God Almighty will exalt a very poor man of the blood of the Emperor Constantine, son of St. Helena, and of the seed of Pepin, (i.e King Pepin of France) who shall on his breast wear the sign which you have seen at the beginning of this letter (t) (I.e. a cross). Through the power of the Most High he shall confound the tyrants, the heretics, and infidels. He will gather a grand army, and the angels shall fight for them; they shall kill all God’s enemies."

Today, Vice President J.D. Vance attended a Mass in the Roman rite with his family at Old St. Mary’s Church in Cincinnati, reports Crisis Magazine editor Eric Sammons on x.com, who was present. “It was nice to see J.D. Vance and his beautiful family at Mass this morning,” Sammons wrote on X on August 23. Sammons said Vance lives nearby and that his family attends several Cincinnati-area parishes when in town. He added that this was Vance’s first visit to Old St. Mary’s since becoming vice president. Vance’s presence brought additional security. According to Sammons, Secret Service agents screened everyone entering the church with handheld wands and checked bags. Sammons said the screening caused only a minute or two of waiting, describing the agents as “professional, efficient, and quite friendly. He also noted that he had heard Vance say his family deliberately varies which churches it attends to avoid repeatedly inconveniencing parishioners at any one parish. #newsBibrwcfcti
J.D. Vance attended a traditional Latin Mass with his family at Old St. Mary’s Church in Cincinnati on August 23. Although Vance has previously said he is not particularly devoted to the Latin Mass, he has criticized restrictions on the traditional liturgy. His attendance attracted attention because it is unusual for a sitting U.S. vice president to participate in a Mass celebrated according to the 1962 missal.
In Italy, a Beach Club Run by Nuns Is in Jeopardy nytimes.com/2026/08/19/world/europe/italy-nuns-be… The Sisters of Charity of Saint Mary have hosted beachgoers in the town of Spotorno for decades. But change is coming.
ተጨማሪ
By Elisabetta Povoledo Reporting from Rome Aug. 19, 2026 It’s been billed as the Sisters of Charity versus the mayor. For 80 years or more, the Sisters of Charity of Saint Mary have occupied a small slice of terrestrial paradise, running one of thousands of beach clubs along Italy’s coast. But this longtime arrangement in Spotorno, an Italian town on the Ligurian Sea, may soon come to an end. The nuns’ beach, like all the Italian coastline, is publicly owned, and local officials say their lease will soon be put up for auction, along with those of other beachfront clubs. Some Spotorno residents are unhappy about it, saying that the nuns had supported the community for many years. Italian news outlets have picked up the story, several of them using variations on “Holy War” in their headlines. But Mayor Mattia Fiorini says he is simply trying to enforce regional and European Union laws that have been ignored for two decades. “Every Italian story seems a soap opera,” he said, adding, “We …ተጨማሪ
Church authorities are examining a possible Eucharistic miracle after a Host placed in water reportedly failed to dissolve and subsequently developed reddish stains that “could be blood”, the Cathedral Parish of El Niño Dios in Cuilapa, Guatemala, has announced on August 22. The parish is the cathedral of the Diocese of Santa Rosa de Lima. The incident began on July 30, during a Missionary Eucharistic Week. A priest was celebrating the Eucharist at a private school when he noticed that a teenage student, after receiving Holy Communion, was removing the Host from his mouth. The priest intervened before the student could throw it to the ground. Following the procedure used in such cases, the priest placed the Host in a glass of water in the chapel of the parish house so that it could dissolve. When the chapel was cleaned the following Thursday, however, a parish worker found that the Host had not dissolved and noticed reddish stains which appeared as though they might be blood. Their influence was still corrupting just as that of Catholics who trivialized their faith. Before the Seinfeld series ended, many Americans like me came to the realization that laughing at people's misfortunes and mocking people when they are vulnerable is really not funny. This was a consistent theme in the series and is contrary to the Beatitudes. Now they have to choose genocide to continue their "success". Just like lukewarm Catholics.
Leo XIV: "Faith Is Not Given Once and for All" At today’s Angelus, Leo XIV appeared to blur the distinction between the objective content of the Faith and its subjective appropriation: “Faith is not something given to us once and for all. Rather, we continually need to rediscover the face of Christ.” He then urged the faithful not to retreat into religious certainties, adding: “When it comes to the Christian faith, we may be content with […] what has been handed down to us.” Instead, Leo advocated “friendship with Jesus” through an “ever-new encounter”: “This may also ask us to follow unfamiliar paths and to make choices different from those we had imagined. This is true both for our personal journey and for the journey of the Church, as well as for our pastoral choices, when we may sometimes think that it is enough simply to continue doing things as we have always done them.”
Two short video quotes from today's Angelus: Leo XIV offers unusual definitions of faith, suggesting that focusing on what has been handed down to us is insufficient.

Does Leo XIV Embrace Borderless Globalism? “People always come before borders, before definitions and institutions,” said Leo XIV at the Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples in Rimini, Italy, on Saturday. “This realization stands at the center of Christianity,” he continued with more platitudes, adding: “Evil is not fought with evil. It is time to oppose the false realism that rearms minds, words, and nations with the realism of mercy.”

This morning, Pope Leo XIV arrived in San Marino, where he was received by the Captains Regent, Alice Mina and Vladimiro Selva, as the Republic and the Holy See mark 100 years of diplomatic relations. At the Basilica of San Marino, he venerated the relics of St. Marinus, the country’s patron saint. He will then continue to Rimini for the Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples, stopping along the way at the Augustinian nuns’ monastery in Pennabilli.

Monsignor Anthony Spinosa, 75, a Maronite Catholic priest, has been accused of engaging in a public homosexual act with registered sex offender Kenneth Kopp, 54, at Perkins Park in Warren, Ohio, according to Wfmj.com. Spinosa had served since 2002 as rector of the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon in North Jackson. He was elevated to the rank of "Chorbishop" (prelate) in 2016. On Thursday, he was relieved of his ministerial assignment. The allegations stem from July 31, when a couple walking their dog told police they saw Kopp on his knees allegedly performing a homosex act on Spinosa, who was smoking a cigar. They further alleged that one of the men invited them to join in and offered to let them watch for payment. According to the police report, the incident occurred "in broad daylight," about 100 meters from a playground where children were present. Police subsequently found Kopp in a Honda Civic near a black rug and pink boots. A search of the vehicle uncovered wigs …ተጨማሪ
Trump’s Economic Approach Draws Concern From Some Republicans nytimes.com/…s/politics/trump-republicans-economy… A plan to lower tariffs on imported beef and trade tensions with Canada have compounded some G.O.P. worries about a central issue in the midterms. By Bayliss Wagner Aug. 23, 2026 President Trump’s economic policies drew a fresh round of concern from some Republicans this weekend who criticized his trade policies, as others in the party sidestepped questions about his broader approach amid a midterm election that has put consumer prices front and center. Representative Ashley Hinson of Iowa, a Republican running in one of the most competitive Senate races, reiterated her opposition to Mr. Trump’s recent announcement that he would lower tariffs for up to 300,000 metric tons of imported ground beef over the next 90 days, which he claimed would push down costs. “We need to focus on affordability, but I think this isn’t the way to do that,” Ms. Hinson told Fox News in an interview …ተጨማሪ
