Vatican employees are asking Pope Leo XIV for compensation for salary losses that they say could cost some workers thousands of euros - including through lower pensions and end-of-service payments. Leo XIV lifted the Covid-era salary restrictions introduced by Pope Francis in 2021, but his September decree did not restore the seniority increases employees lost during a two-year freeze. The Association of Vatican Lay Employees (ADLV), representing about 850 workers, is now asking the Vatican to address those losses through compensation, a one-off payment or another corrective measure.
Leo XIV claims that Christ founded a “religious movement” - in direct contradiction to Church teaching and the Gospel. The recently published document The Path of Hope was signed by the heads of three Vatican dicasteries and approved by Leo XIV on 22 June. It states in §10: “Early Christianity developed from the movement initiated by Jesus and his disciples, distinguishing itself from the various forms of Judaism over time.” That’s the liberal Protestant view associated with figures such as Albert Schweitzer. 2,200 people joined Switzerland’s March for Life in Zurich on Saturday under the banner “Together for Life”. Around 200 masked counter-demonstrators, some on bicycles, tried repeatedly to block the route, overturning containers and setting off firecrackers. Police issued orders to disperse before deploying water cannons and rubber shots (!). Bottles were thrown at officers and two people were provisionally arrested.
