Canada plans to permanently exclude people with mental illness alone from euthanasia. The expansion was due in March 2027. Justice Minister Sean Fraser cited two reasons: no medical consensus on when mental illness is incurable, and poor access to psychiatric care. However, the Liberals voted against a Conservative bill seeking the same ban. They argued its wording was too broad. Instead, they plan their own bill, combining the ban with a proposal to allow advance euthanasia requests for patients with dementia. Critics accuse the government of using the ban to push through this expansion.
