On August 27, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria called on the government and security agencies to step up efforts to combat killings and kidnappings following recent attacks in Benue and Niger states. In a statement titled “Stop the Slaughter in Borgu and Ukum, Stop the Killings in Nigeria,” the bishops said the country was experiencing an “unabated trail of blood and terror” that had reached an “intolerable crest.” The statement was signed by CBCN President Archbishop Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso of Kaduna. Some evangelical groups in India’s western state of Maharashtra are asking Christians to sign declarations confirming that they attend prayer meetings voluntarily. Maharashtra’s Freedom of Religion Law, which targets “forced religious conversions,” took effect on August 28. It prohibits conversions involving force, fraud, coercion, undue influence or inducement. Christian groups fear its broad provisions could be applied to ordinary religious or charitable activities. The forms, reported in Mumbai and neighbouring districts, state that Christians attend of their own choice, without pressure, inducement or threats. Agents researched travel and credit-card records. FBI personnel in Boston surveilled the second priest at the airport, while Customs and Border Protection questioned him and searched his phone. The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (SSPX) has announced that it will continue its annual pilgrimage to Lourdes. Following the episcopal consecrations on July 1 in Ecône, Bishop Jean-Marc Micas of Tarbes and Lourdes withdrew permission for the SSPX to celebrate public Masses, administer sacraments, or organize public prayers at Lourdes. In an August 22 statement, Fr. Gonzague Peignot, superior of the FSSPX in France, announced that the Fraternity intends to continue coming to Lourdes every year, “Our Lady does not deserve to be abandoned despite the obstacles,” he said. The FSSPX expressed 'sorrow and incomprehension', questioning the bishop's decision and pointing to the interreligious Christian-Muslim pilgrimage that was welcomed at the sanctuary in October 2025. At the Basilica of San Marino, he venerated the relics of St. Marinus, the country’s patron saint. He will then continue to Rimini for the Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples, stopping along the way at the Augustinian nuns’ monastery in Pennabilli.
